We made it!
Despite our well under 2 hour layover in Frankfurt, we made it to our hotel yesterday without incident. We were tired. We were a bit in need of showers. We were generally a bit bedraggled.
However, we were all ecstatic to be in Rome!
After a short rest time where some napped and others showered (some managed both), we took the Metro into the city. Partly it was a dry run to see how long of a commute we would have this morning, partly it was to make sure we didn't all collapse into bed thereby missing dinner and waking up at 2 am local time wide awake.
The large group broke into smaller groups to wander the area around St. Peter's basilica. I was hoping to post a picture or two, but in my tired state, I forgot that my camera batteries were dead. (They shall be replaced after I finish this post, so pictures should be added to tomorrow's post.)
Once we spent about 2 hours in the city, we trudged our way home. It was a near silent group as the day was really taking a toll. We had a short time to relax before dinner at 8:30 pm (20:30!). By the time dinner was done, all we wanted was some quality time in bed!
The sun is rising and it looks to be a beautiful morning here in Rome. Breakfast begins at 7 am (1 am in EST). Then we will journey to the Vatican Museum for our morning guided tour, followed by an afternoon of seeing the major basilicas. I think I'll manage to tire the group out again today, but we can find strength not only the grandeur of the city, but in the sugar high from the gelato!
